When You Fall Behind (and Why That’s Okay)
I missed a blog post last week. And if you are reading this one later than usual, it is because I am late on this week's blog, too.
Part of me wanted to skip it altogether, to quietly pick back up next week and pretend I never fell behind. That temptation is familiar, because so many of us do this in our own lives. When we slip on a habit, miss a deadline, or get off track, we convince ourselves it is too late to try again. We tell ourselves we have failed.
But falling behind is not failure. It is life.
Life does not move in straight lines. It bends, pauses, and detours. Sometimes we are the most disciplined version of ourselves, organized, productive, on time. And sometimes, no matter how much we try, things fall through. Maybe work is overwhelming, maybe your health takes a dip, maybe you just need a break. Whatever the reason, missing a step does not erase the path you are on.
Here is the truth: showing up late is still showing up.
Think about the times you have fallen behind before. Did you stop brushing your teeth forever because you missed a night? Did you quit a friendship because you forgot to call for one week? Probably not. You picked back up where you left off, maybe a little messier, maybe less perfect, but still moving forward.
The same is true for healing, growth, and self-care. Progress is rarely linear. Some weeks you feel like you are on top of it all, and other weeks it feels like everything slips through your fingers. Both are part of the process.
What matters is returning.
Returning reminds you that your worth is not defined by flawless consistency. Returning shows you that your identity is not tied to a perfect record. Returning says, “I still care, even if it is later than I wanted it to be.”
So if you have been feeling behind, behind on your goals, behind on your healing, behind on where you thought you would be by now, I hope you hear this:
Missing a step does not make you a failure. It makes you human. And being human means you are allowed to pause, allowed to restart, and allowed to keep moving at your own pace.
Being late does not mean you are lost.
It means you are still moving.
And moving, at any pace, is enough.
